Building a large software product is like making a big-budget movie!
It’s not just the team effort. It’s about collaboration, & the deeper the better. No single person can take the credit – not even the man behind the idea nor the investor. Because the outcome of the collective effort depends on too many factors & itself remains an x-factor for a long time.
Here are the teams involved in building a software product:
To ensure that team members give their absolute best, the Product Head must build & sustain an ecosystem & environment which encourages each one to give their best and help the team achieve the best.
The environment must encourage every single player to bring out their ultimate, holding nothing back – not only during brainstorming, but also by making casual suggestions freely, cutting across disciplines.
Just like film-making, software product building is never about one person or even one team. User requirements, technology, architecture including AI, testing, devops, product marketing, finance and user-validation must all come together by empowerment & trust. All this is built by a team of experts who get together for a couple of years with a single purpose.
There will naturally be disparity in payouts & perks, depending on the seniority of the role, experience, & market rates. But it’s the Head’s responsibility to create an environment which encourages intermingling in a structured way, where inputs are welcomed across the board.
While each member can give his best, it becomes easier if he is surrounded by team members who share the same vision & mindset. When every team member is empowered to contribute fearlessly, there’s enough room to skirt individual egos.
