Gen AI has shown us the full-length mirror on the hyped value of human intelligence!
Everybody who’s been around for 40 years or more will agree that “human intelligence” is valued much less today, than ever before!
In reality, the value of human intelligence has been eroding for decades. Starting with the calculator, personal computer, online data with Google Search & progressing to the smartphone – our neural pathways have been a victim of gradual disuse. But it is only recently that Gen AI has shown us the full-length mirror!
In this long process, how much of our thinking have we actually been outsourcing?
When we delegate or outsource a task, we share our strategy & the expected outcome with the target person or software, who then proceeds to execute a series of tasks, some of which may be further sub-delegated.
Each delegated sub task involves some thought process before starting any action.
With Gen AI, we are able to delegate more complex tasks which we would have been delegated to a team of experts. This leaves Gen AI to manage the thought process / mental effort that precedes each action!
For example, there was a small mental effort involved when we gave up our mental math for calculators. This mental effort was considerably larger when we replaced manual accounting ledgers with accounting softwares. Finally, for each prompt that we submit to ChatGPT for generating a complex analysis, we are outsourcing a huge mental effort!
Clearly, we humans have been outsourcing our thought processing to machines & software since decades.
As we know, AI is based on statistics. And as we also know, statistics is expected for 90% probability rather than 100% accuracy. Call it hallucination, poor modelling, or bad prompting – this model in non-deterministic.
In prompt recognition of this, the Supreme Court of India has smartly put the onus on humans by unequivocally classifying any misrepresentation by AI as a misconduct by the litigant.
