Did you know that an average Google Gemini Search lookup consumed 0.03 watt-hour of electricity An average Google Gemini AI text query uses roughly 0.24 watt-hours. But an advanced reasoning query / agent requires upwards of 4.0+ watt-hours.
That represents a huge spike in energy requirements. Here’re some stats:
Huge power consumption is the primary issue. But there’s more. An accompanying huge demand for water for cooling & a matching demand from the drainage system framework!
Btw, data centers need to be located in/near cities, because of their dependence on basic infrastructure like power, water, & drainage. Along with manpower to maintain the centers.
Here’s how data centers can seriously affect local environments.
Data centres operate 24 x 7, consuming large amounts of electricity – of the order of 100,000 apartments. Just imagine what a few centers could do to the energy demand & supply equation to your neighbourhood
Hundreds of thousands of servers inside each data centre run continuously & generate vast amounts of heat. The air-conditioning required to maintain safe temperatures needs a lot of water to complete its cooling cycle.
And the warm water needs to be disposed of, creating a load on existing drainage systems.
Data centres take up valuable space and must be located on energy networks. Heat released continuously adversely affects the local weather. As more such centers are built in cities, they compete with other demands for large land parcels, which may encroach on housing and green spaces
40 Mayors across the world have signed a common pact to regulate how data centers must be built & operated. Currently included are nearly 100 cities* with a billion citizens – representing 23% of the global economy. The list of cities should tell us something. They run from Seattle to Mexico on America’s West Coast & Montreal to Buenos Aires on the East. Oslo to Lisboa on Europe’s West & Casablanca to Cape Town in Africa’s. And Dubai to Chennai on Asia’s West Coast & Yokohama to Djakarta in the East.
We are practically at the beginning of the AI deployment cycle. So it’s anybody’s guess what will happen when everyone (& their uncles!) start using AI agents to organise & execute every activity under the sun.
One thing is for sure: power consumption & infra requirements are sure to hit the roof! This is bound to lead to tighter government regulation, which is sure to translate into global hikes in token pricing.
Finally, consumers may be forced to start economising on token usage. And companies may even start auctioning tokens based on consumption!
Welcome to the brave new world.
